Why Periodontal Therapy?

The primary goal of this treatment is to stop the disease in its tracks. To achieve that goal, we have identified a number of objectives that will help us in the battle, including:

  • Remove plaque, tartar and calculus from the surface of teeth above and below the gums
  • Reduce or eliminate the swelling in gums
  • Reduce the periodontal pocket
  • Maintain a high level of oral hygiene to prevent the continuation and spread of the disease

The Periodontal Therapy Process

After our initial consultation, we determine the best course of action to achieve the objectives listed above.

We ask the questions:

  • What will work best for the patient?
  • How severe is the damage?

To start, a patient most often undergoes a thorough cleaning and then they head into the Scaling and Root Planing phase where the roots of teeth are meticulously cleaned. In some severe cases, Scaling and Root Planing is followed up by a round of antibiotics or another form of adjunct therapy designed to best stop the spread of the disease for good.

The dentist will then prescribe an at-home treatment, often in the form of custom-fit fluoride dental trays, designed to prevent further decay and boost the overall health of the mouth. Our team will routinely follow up with the patient to ensure they keep up with a strong oral hygiene regimen to prevent the disease from returning.
